Working memory is the mental workspace where you hold information for a few seconds while doing something with it — reversing a phone number, keeping a total in your head, following multi-step instructions. It is closely tied to reasoning and attention, and it is one of the best everyday predictors of how well you can juggle a complex task.
Below: where working memory fits the map of cognition, why it matters day to day, how the timed assessment really measures it, and two manipulation puzzles you can try now.
Where working memory sits
In the Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) model, short-term and working memory (often written Gsm) is the broad ability for holding information in immediate awareness and acting on it within a few seconds. It is closely tied to attention and correlates strongly with fluid reasoning — holding the pieces of a problem in mind is part of solving it — which is why a large working-memory span so often travels with strong reasoning.
Working memory in daily life
You use working memory whenever you keep a goal active while the world tries to distract you: recalculating a tip after someone changes their order, remembering where you were in a recipe after answering the door, or holding the first half of a sentence while you parse the second half. Capacity is limited — most people can actively juggle only a handful of items at once, which is exactly why the skill is worth measuring.
How the full assessment measures it
A genuine working-memory task briefly shows a short sequence of symbols, hides it, and then asks you to reproduce or transform it — often after a brief interfering task that stops you from silently rehearsing. That show-then-hide timing cannot be reproduced on a static web page, so the two demos below are open-book manipulation puzzles: the list stays on screen, but the operation you perform on it is the same skill the hidden task isolates.
In the full MOSAIC-48 assessment, working memory gets its own session rather than sitting in the mixed reasoning blocks. Each trial flashes a sequence of five to seven neutral tokens for a few seconds, removes it, and — on the harder trials — inserts a short unrelated judgment before asking the question, so you have to hold the sequence through interference. The items sample order maintenance (recalling positions), manipulation (reordering or updating), and interference recall. Working memory is one of eight domains that combine into your Composite Cognitive Index.
Try a few example questions
These stay on screen — the real test hides them. The skill being exercised is the same: hold the items and transform them.

Reading your working-memory score
Because working memory has a hard capacity limit, small differences matter and results are more sensitive to state than most domains — a distracting room or a poor night’s sleep can cost you a token or two. Read the score against your own other domains, and treat one session as a snapshot rather than a fixed span.
It is an internal-reference estimate for self-insight, not a standardized or official memory score, and it is not a screen for any clinical condition. If memory changes are genuinely worrying you, that is a conversation for a qualified professional, not an online assessment.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between working memory and short-term memory?
Short-term memory is passive holding — keeping a phone number in mind for a moment. Working memory adds the work: holding the number while reversing it, or keeping a total while adding to it. This test targets the second, harder skill.
How many things can most people hold at once?
Estimates cluster around three to four independent chunks in working memory — far fewer than people expect. Grouping items into meaningful chunks is the main way to stretch that limit.
Can I train my working memory?
Practising a specific task reliably improves that task, but whether the gains spread to everyday memory or reasoning is genuinely debated. Treat bold “brain-training” claims with caution and any single result as a snapshot.

MOSAIC-48 is a full online composite cognitive assessment across eight domains. It is not an official IQ test and does not apply standardized clinical norms — it reports internal-reference estimates for self-insight, not a diagnosis.
