Spatial reasoning is the ability to picture shapes and transform them in your mind — turning them, flipping them, folding them, and imagining them from another viewpoint. It underlies everything from reading a map to packing a suitcase, and it is one of the most reliably measurable cognitive skills.

Where visual-spatial ability sits
In the Cattell–Horn–Carroll (CHC) framework, visual processing (written Gv) is the broad ability behind generating, holding, and transforming mental images. It covers narrower skills such as mental rotation, visualization, and spatial scanning. Gv is only partly correlated with verbal or numerical ability, which is one reason a spatial score can look quite different from the rest of a profile — being articulate tells you little about how easily someone folds a shape in their head.
Rotation is not the same as mirroring
The single most important idea in mental-rotation items: a rotated shape keeps its handedness, but a mirrored shape reverses it. No amount of turning in the plane can turn a left glove into a right glove. When a question asks for “the same figure, only rotated,” your job is to reject every option that has been flipped.
Folding a net in your head
A cube net is a flattened cube. Folding it mentally lets you decide which faces end up opposite and which end up adjacent. A useful shortcut on a cross-shaped net: faces two steps apart along a straight arm fold to opposite sides, while faces that share an edge on the paper become neighbours once folded. The centre face is special — it touches every face on the arms and sits opposite only the one at the far end.
Why spatial reasoning matters
Spatial thinking is quietly everywhere: reading a map, reversing a car, packing a boot, following an assembly diagram, picturing how a room will look rearranged. It is also one of the most robust predictors of achievement and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — imagining a molecule, a mechanism, or a graph in three dimensions does real cognitive work.
Mental rotation in particular has been studied for decades, and it produces one of the most reliable signatures in cognitive science: the time people take to decide whether two figures match rises smoothly with the angle between them, as though they were physically turning the shape behind their eyes.
How MOSAIC-48 measures visual-spatial reasoning
In the full assessment, six visual-spatial items are interleaved with four other reasoning domains across two mixed rounds, so spatial tasks arrive between verbal, quantitative, and other items rather than in one long block. The items are untimed — the aim is accuracy of the mental transformation, not raw speed.
Those six items sample mental rotation (deciding which figure is a genuine rotation rather than a mirror image), net folding (working out which faces of an unfolded cube meet or sit opposite once assembled), and spatial perspective (picturing a solid from another viewpoint). Reading your spatial score
Read your spatial result relative to your own other domains rather than as a standing against other people. A high spatial peak next to an average verbal score simply means shapes come more easily to you than words do — useful self-knowledge, not a ranking.
As with every domain, one session is a snapshot: fatigue, screen size, and the particular items all nudge the number. It is an internal-reference estimate for self-insight, not a standardized or official score, and not a tool for diagnosis or selection.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a mirror image count as wrong?
Because rotation and reflection are different operations. Turning a figure in the plane never changes its handedness, so a mirrored version is a genuinely different object — the same reason a left glove will not fit a right hand no matter how you turn it.
Can spatial reasoning be trained?
Spatial skills are among the more trainable cognitive abilities: focused practice on rotation and folding reliably improves performance on those tasks, and some of that gain carries to related problems. How far it transfers to unrelated abilities is less certain.
Is a low spatial score a weakness I should worry about?
Not on its own. Many people reason spatially by other routes — sketching, physical models, step-by-step logic — and a single dip on one session is not a verdict. Read it as one axis of a profile, not a label.
