A single score compresses everything you do into one number. A cognitive profile keeps the detail: it shows how you distribute across reasoning, memory, spatial, verbal, quantitative, learning, speed, and attention. Two people can land on exactly the same composite index and still have profiles that look nothing alike — and that difference is often the most interesting thing the test can tell you.

One number, or the whole shape?

Imagine two people who both score 117 overall. The first is evenly balanced — steady across every domain. The second is exceptional at spatial reasoning and merely average at verbal tasks, and the two pull the average back to the same 117. The single number is identical; the way each person thinks is not. A profile is simply the picture that keeps that structure visible instead of averaging it away.

Think of the composite index as an average and the profile as the spread behind it. Averages are convenient, but they hide the very information that makes you you. A profile trades the false precision of one figure for a more honest map of strengths and soft spots.

The eight axes behind the shape

A profile is a reading on eight abilities that are related but only partly overlap. Each one becomes an axis on the chart: the further you reach on that ability, the further the outline stretches along its spoke. Connect the eight points and you get a shape — the thing that disappears the moment everything is averaged into a single index.

None of the eight is the whole of thinking, and none is redundant with the others. Together they cover ground a general-knowledge quiz never touches — not what you have memorized, but how you reason through the unfamiliar, hold information in mind, and move it around.

  • Visual-Spatial — how readily you turn, fold, and re-view shapes in your head.
  • Working Memory — how much you can hold in mind at once while you rearrange or transform it.
  • Quantitative Reasoning — how clearly you see structure in numbers, ratios, and uncertainty.
  • Learning Efficiency — how quickly a rule you were just taught becomes something you can use.
  • Verbal Reasoning — how tightly you track logical and conceptual structure carried in words.
  • Attention Control — how well you resist an obvious-but-wrong pull and switch rules on cue.
  • Processing Speed — how fast you compare simple information without losing accuracy.

Why the same score can mean different minds

The eight domains are related but only partly correlated. Being quick on processing speed does not guarantee a large working-memory span, and a talent for verbal logic says little about mental rotation. Because the abilities are partially independent, there are many different combinations that add up to the same overall index — which is why "how smart are you?" is a blunter question than "what are you smart at?"

Reading and using your profile

Read your profile as a relative map of your own abilities — where you are comparatively strong and where you lean on effort — not as a ranking against other people and not as a fixed trait. Performance shifts with rest, practice, and the specific tasks in front of you, so a single session is a snapshot rather than a ceiling.

Treat the peaks as leads to follow and the dips as questions rather than labels. A lower axis is an invitation to check whether a given task is playing to it — a cue to reach for a different strategy — not a verdict about what you are able to learn. The signal lives in the contrast between your own axes, which is far more actionable than the single number sitting on top of it.

Putting the shape to work is mostly about matching approach to strength. If spatial reasoning is your peak, you will often get further by sketching a problem than by talking it through; if verbal reasoning leads, the reverse tends to hold. Where an axis dips, expect a little more friction and plan for it — more time, a written scaffold, a second pass — instead of reading the friction as a limit. And when two people compare shapes, the most useful pairings are often complementary rather than identical: one person’s dip is another’s peak, and the profile is what makes that fit visible.

Is a sharp peak better than a balanced profile?

Neither is "better" — they are different. A sharp peak points to a standout strength you can build on; a balanced shape means you adapt across task types without an obvious weak spot. What matters is recognizing which one describes you and using it deliberately.

What should I do about a low domain?

First, check whether it is genuinely low or just lower than your own peaks — a dip on your chart can still sit around the middle of our reference range. Beyond that, a softer domain is a prompt to lean on strategy rather than force: give tasks that load on it more time and structure, and let a stronger domain carry the work where you can. It is a working detail to plan around, not a fixed limit.

Can my profile change over time?

The shape can shift with rest, practice, mood, and the particular items you happen to see, so treat any single result as a snapshot. Broad, lasting change in the underlying abilities is slow and hard to demonstrate, so read movement between sessions cautiously.

Is the composite index an official IQ score?
